Kia ora, hello and welcome to An Ethical Yarn, a blog which explores ideas for re-fashioning the fabric of society. In Australian and New Zealand slang, a yarn is an informal chat. While my British friends may view a yarn as a story which is untrue or embellished, in this blog I examine ethical issues in a frank and conversational way. Yarn is also used for craft: when knitting or weaving, individual yarns are used to form one piece of fabric. Similarly, our world consists of a multitude of cultures, ecosystems, beliefs, priorities and lifestyles which knit together to form the fabric of society.
I’m Aleisha, a sustainability enthusiast, nature lover and adventurer. I am an environmental and sustainability professional with a Master of Science in Education for Sustainability. I’ve lived and worked in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and Thailand. I’m using this blog to explore the interconnected social and environmental issues that we face today, so that we can live happier, more fulfilled and less damaging lifestyles. I believe everyone has a moral responsibility to address sustainability issues and am particularly interested in the relationships between people’s well-being and that of nature.
I’m happiest outdoors, adventuring and also love writing, crafting and doing yoga. Aotearoa/New Zealand is my home; I currently work in natural resources management in Australia and spent last year in Thailand, working at Marist Asia Foundation with migrants from Myanmar
